On Sunday morning, Reno was already gone when Rufus woke up. He felt a little nonplussed that his lover had managed to leave without awakening him, and tried to convince himself it was because Reno was very good at being sneaky when he put his mind to it and not because Rufus trusted the man so much. Rufus also refused to acknowledge the faint sense of worry he felt whenever he thought about Reno’s mission; investigating the presence of some of Hojo’s experiments on some ShinRa property about two hundred kilometers east of Midgar. With no lover to distract or amuse him, he focused on work, spending most of the day in his office.

On Monday, there was a rather long message left on his phone from Reno. After complaining about how cold and wet it was, a detailed description of the number of bug bites Reno had suffered and their location on his body, the message turned into something decidedly more… interesting. Among his rare virtues, Reno possessed an amazing imagination that he unleashed for five minutes and twenty seven seconds, explaining just what exactly he expected Rufus to do to him once he returned in compensation for the ‘lousy, suck-ass mission’ he’d been assigned – on his day off, none the less. Rufus needed several minutes to calm himself after listening to the message, then left one in return on his lover’s phone; a not so polite demand for a proper mission update.

*******

On Tuesday, there was no word from Reno. No mission update, no complaints, no obscene messages. Rufus managed to complete a very satisfactory amount of work that day, and for some odd reason drank half a bottle of whiskey before collapsing in his large bed. He told himself it was the alcohol that made his sleep so disrupted, and cursed himself each time he awoke to find himself curled up on Reno’s side of the bed.

On Wednesday, he nearly shot his lover when he found himself unceremoniously yanked into an empty conference room as he was leaving a meeting with the heads of various research and development departments. Once he recognized his assailant, he was still sorely tempted to fire his weapon, but Reno distracted him by kneeling in front of Rufus, undoing his pants’ zipper and giving him one of the fastest and most intense blowjobs he’d had in weeks. Immediately after Rufus came, Reno wiped his mouth, gave Rufus a quick kiss and shoved a disc into Rufus’ coat pocket before racing out of the room.

Upon returning to his office, Rufus found that the disc contained Reno’s mission report and that Tseng had sent him an email about assigning Reno and Rude to a new mission. This time, they were tracking down someone who claimed to have come across some old personnel files of the Turks and was auctioning the information off to the highest bidder. Tseng expected the two Turks to be finished by nightfall, at the latest, since the target was a petty thief who seemed to have stumbled across an old computer not properly destroyed three years ago.

On Thursday, Rufus arrived at the office to find a medical report from Dr. Alim in his email. At some point during the night, Reno had stopped by the department and been administered two hi-potions to heal him of injuries sustained while tracking down the ‘petty thief’. It seemed that several crime syndicates had moved in on the target to obtain the information before the Turks recovered it, and Reno had been injured during the resulting shoot-out. He had left against Dr. Alim’s objections as the information still hadn’t been recovered, and Dr. Alim was making it perfectly clear that he wanted to receive no blame for the ‘suicidal idiot’ rejecting his medical advice. After reading that email, there was one from Tseng outlining his new strategy to retrieve the information.

Rufus kept mostly to his office that day, since people scurried to avoid him whenever he stepped outside of it. He finished the rest of the bottle of whiskey that night, and left a very precise message on Reno’s cell phone about how ShinRa was not responsible for paying his funeral expenses if he ignored medical advice, and how Dr. Alim was now authorized to use whatever was necessary, be it a Sleep spell or tranquilizer dart, against him if he dared to leave Medical before properly released.

On Friday, he spent the morning and part of the afternoon at various locations, checking new facilities and participating in two PR events to promote ShinRa Electrical Company’s new image. He received the message from Tseng about the Turks finally retrieving the information on his way to the last event, and was on his way back to his office when Dr. Alim called to complain about Reno. Apparently, Rufus shouldn’t have warned Reno about the new orders as he’d thought to cast his barrier spell against the doctor after receiving treatment. Rufus wearily authorized anyone in the department to be able to restrain his lover if needed, and felt the beginnings of a pounding headache. He would have to double Medical’s maintenance budget, he was certain. Actually, double might not be enough to cover the damage Reno was sure to inflict upon his next visit.

For a reason he couldn’t fathom, Pamela gave him a very bright smile when he reached his office, while Tosh seemed to be deliberately looking away from him. Frowning at the Turks’ odd behavior, he entered his office to find a comatose person stretched out on his couch. Reno was out of uniform, dressed in a pair of scrub pants he must have borrowed (or stolen) from Medical and a pale gold sweater that probably belonged to Rude, considering its size. For once he’d remembered to take off his shoes before falling asleep on the couch. His right hand was heavily bandaged, there were more bandages around his neck and his left ankle was wrapped as if it was sprained. There was an impressive bruise along Reno’s left jaw, and Rufus was left to wonder if the idiot looked this bad *after* two visits to Medical that he probably didn’t want to look in Reno’s files any time soon to see what had all happened to his lover.

Judging from the way the redhead was huddled on the couch that he was probably cold, Rufus removed his long coat as he approached Reno. He draped it over his sleeping lover – and barely leaned back in time to avoid the left fist swung at his face. Reno opened his eyes and blinked a few times as if he had trouble focusing his eyes, before he grabbed hold of Rufus’ vest and dragged him forward. Rufus found himself treated to a rather sloppy and off-target kiss before Reno mumbled his name and went back to sleep.

Rufus spent the rest of the afternoon and a good part of the evening finishing paperwork and returning calls, and all the while Reno continued to sleep. Tosh helped to half carry him to the car, but Rufus managed to put him to bed once they reached the apartment. He somehow managed to decline his still groggy lover’s invitation for a ‘bit of fun’ and spent the rest of the evening in his home office, going over the reports from the mission and reviewing Tseng’s proposals on how to ensure that such an incident didn’t occur again. Considering how the Turks were taking over for SOLDIER and receiving more attention from the public, they would have to step up their defenses for the previously ‘black’ department.

Before he quit for the night and got ready for bed, he made sure that his calendar was cleared for the following day.

On Saturday, Rufus made good on all the things he ‘owed’ a rested and mostly recovered Reno. After all, as president of ShinRa Electrical Company, it was his job to ensure his employees were properly motivated and rewarded for their hard work.
